Each 2 experience levels, they can be set to a 1 higher range, although I rarely set them above 2, and probably close to half are at 1, to keep them in a certain area of operations where they're needed. By selecting a location and a range, you can prevent them from ever straying into dangerous sectors.įor example, a LT with a range of 3 based in Argon Prime can cover every Argon sector in the Argon home region without venturing into Pirate sectors.Īt experience level 6, you can restart your Sector Trader as a Local Trader, and the game will prompt you for a range (0 or 1). Rather than losing UTs constantly as they fly casually through Pirate and Xenon sectors, I prefer mostly "Local Traders", sector traders that have a range >0, so they can trade in adjacent sectors to where they're assigned, but are still confined to an area. Pick the right tool for the job at hand, rather than the "best" ship according to overall stats. In a couple of places, the higher shielding on a bigger ship matters more than speed, if it gives the pilot a chance to jump out instead of getting blown into space dust. In my opinion, Fast beat Large in most cases, although I'll use Superfreighters in a few places such as Ore Belt, etc., where capacity is generally the bigger concern (Teladi freighters suddenly look attractive), and you don't need to worry so much about beating the NPC competition to the best deal. When you have to pump 500K into the ship for the pilot, they're not quite so "free" anymore. At the price of "free", most ships look good for the purpose, although I'd still prefer to sell a Dolphin and buy something better in most situations. Nanook's initial point is a possible over-riding consideration. The Caiman is the fastest of the group, but typically offers the least shield protection, so it's a tradeoff, depending on location. I'll second ancienthighway's picks: the Caiman, Mercury, and Demeter are all reasonably fast, carry adequate amounts of cargo, are reasonably priced, and are available at multiple convenient locations.
